Facebook Feed video ads: 4:5, 1:1 or 9:16?
Use 4:5 for Facebook Feed. Meta's Ads Guide lists 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 pixels, MP4, MOV or GIF, from 1 second to 241 minutes and up to 4GB. A 4:5 video takes more of the screen than a square one without the overlays a full 9:16 frame meets. Keep 1:1 for Marketplace, and 9:16 for Reels and Stories.

Updated
We don't crop our feed sizes out of the vertical video. Each RhythmAds ad is laid out again for 4:5 (1080 x 1350) and 1:1 (1080 x 1080): text and captions move into that size's safe area, and in product scenes the product is shown whole over a blurred copy of itself instead of being cut off at the edges.

4:5, 1:1 and 9:16 compared
| Ratio | Our size | In the feed | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | Meta's listed ratio for Facebook Feed | Facebook Feed, and Instagram Feed when you want one feed file |
| 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | Shorter than 4:5, so it takes less of the screen | Facebook Marketplace, where Meta lists 1:1 |
| 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | Instagram Feed lists it; Facebook Feed lists 4:5 | Reels and Stories first; Instagram Feed if you're testing vertical there |
Meta's undated mobile video tips say to try taller videos in 4:5 or 9:16. Its Instagram Feed spec page now lists 9:16 at 1080 x 1920, while Facebook Feed stays on 4:5. If you run one file across both feeds, 4:5 is the shape that is listed or suggested for both.
Why we don't just crop the vertical video
Cropping a 9:16 video to 4:5 cuts about 30% of the height. If the headline sits near the top or the captions near the bottom, they're the first things to go. A center crop of a product shot can also slice off the bottle cap or the shoe toe.
So each size is its own render. The scene timings and script stay the same; only the layout changes. On 4:5 and 1:1 we keep the top 6% and bottom 10% clear and 6% on each side.
A feed detail that catches people out
For the Awareness objective, and for Reach, 2-second continuous video views, Impressions or Post engagement goals, Meta says the ad footer (headline, description and button) is not shown on mobile in Facebook Feed. If your offer only lives in the headline, put it in the video too.

Where this stops being true
Meta's Facebook Feed page gives no cropping guidance, so how Meta trims a ratio it doesn't expect is not something we can state. Our 4:5 export is 1080 x 1350, above Meta's minimum but below the 1440 x 1800 it lists. We only export 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9.
Questions
- What is the best aspect ratio for Facebook Feed video ads?
- 4:5. It's the ratio Meta's Ads Guide lists for Facebook Feed video, at 1440 x 1800 pixels.
- Should I use 1:1 or 4:5 for Facebook ads?
- 4:5 for the feed, since it's what Meta lists and it's taller. Use 1:1 for Facebook Marketplace, where Meta lists square at a minimum of 1080 x 1080.
- Can I run a 9:16 video in Facebook Feed?
- Meta lists 4:5 for Facebook Feed, so a vertical video isn't the shape it asks for there. We'd give the feed a 4:5 file and keep 9:16 for Reels and Stories.
- Why is my Facebook video ad missing its headline and button?
- Meta's Ads Guide says that on mobile Facebook Feed, the headline, description and button aren't shown for the Awareness objective or for Reach, 2-second view, Impressions and Post engagement goals.
