Caption every Meta video ad. Meta says most video ads in mobile feed are watched without sound, so burn the words into the video, keep them inside the safe zone (out of the top 14% and roughly the bottom 35% on Reels), and use Meta's own captions only as a backup.

## From RhythmAds

Every RhythmAds ad ships with burned-in, word-by-word captions: the voice line appears a few words at a time and the word being spoken is highlighted. The caption box sits inside the safe zone we set for each of the four sizes we render, with layout tests that fail if a caption or the logo lands outside it, and a finishing check confirms the captions are there before the ad is done.

## Why sound-off matters, and where it doesn't

Meta's advice for video ads is blunt: most video ads in mobile feed are viewed without sound, so the message has to work visually. Meta also reported that in its internal tests, captioned video ads increased view time by an average of 12%. That post is undated, so treat the number as old.

Reels is the exception. Meta says sound is on by default in Reels unless the person has turned it off, and recommends 9:16 video with audio there. So write for both: a voiceover that sells with sound on, and captions that carry it with sound off.

## Burned-in captions or Meta's captions

Two ways to caption a Meta video ad:

| Question | Burned into the video | Meta's captions (auto or uploaded) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shows up | Always: the words are part of the picture | Shown by Meta's player on top of the video, not part of the file |
| Styling | Yours: font, size, color, highlight | Meta's standard style |
| Editing | Re-export the video | Change the caption text, not the video |
| Languages | One per video file | Meta launched auto captions in US English first |

Our view: burn them in. You control what the viewer reads, and the captions survive every crop and placement. Add Meta's captions as well only if you also want them for accessibility tools.

## How to do it

1. Write the voiceover first, in short spoken lines. Captions can only be as readable as the script.
2. Show a few words at a time, not the whole sentence. A full sentence at the bottom of a phone screen is a paragraph nobody reads.
3. Make the words big and high contrast: white or yellow on a dark box or with a heavy outline, so they read over any footage.
4. Place them inside the safe zone. For Reels, Meta suggests keeping text and logos out of the top 14%, roughly the bottom 35% and 6% on each side, where the profile icon and call-to-action button can cover them.
5. Check the placement with Meta's Reels safe zone checker (PowerPoint, PSD or Keynote templates) before you export.
6. Watch the finished ad on your phone with the sound off. If you can't follow it, neither can a buyer scrolling past.

## Common mistakes

- Captions that cover the product. Move the product up or the caption down, but keep both visible.
- Captions that drift out of sync after an edit. Re-time them after every cut.
- Product names spelled wrong in the captions. It looks careless, and it's the word people would search for.

## Limits

Meta's current help article on caption settings did not load for us today, so we could not confirm which languages and placements its auto captions cover now; the US English detail comes from Meta's launch post. The 14%/35%/6% figures are from Meta's Reels ad specs and can differ by placement, so check with Meta's safe zone checker.

## Questions

### Do Meta's automatic captions replace burned-in captions?

We wouldn't rely on them alone. Burned-in captions show in every placement and look the way you designed them. Meta's captions are a useful extra, not a substitute.

### Where should captions go on a Reels ad?

Inside the safe zone. Meta's Reels specs suggest keeping text out of the top 14%, roughly the bottom 35% and 6% on each side, so the caption usually sits just above the bottom third.

### Do I need captions if my Reels ad has sound?

Yes. Meta says Reels plays with sound by default, but people who have turned sound off still see your ad, and feed placements are mostly watched without sound.

### Should captions match the voiceover word for word?

Yes. Viewers notice when the words on screen and the words spoken differ, and it reads as a mistake. Shorten the voiceover rather than the captions.
