# Founder story video ads, in your own words

Source: https://rhythmads.com/formats/founder-story-ads · Updated October 30, 2026 · By RhythmAds

A founder story ad opens with you, or someone on your team, saying why you made the product, in your own short clip. That clip covers the first two scenes, 8 seconds in all. Then narrated scenes show the product, how it's used and the offer. It's the only RhythmAds format with a real person in it, and that person is you.

## Scene by scene: Founder story

You tell why you made it, in your own clip, then the product shows itself. About 17 seconds:

1. Hook (4 s): your own clip, with a consent record
2. The problem (4 s): your own clip, with a consent record
3. The product (3 s): motion template from your product photos
4. How it works (3 s): AI-generated clip
5. Call to action (3 s): motion template from your product photos

## When it works

- There's a real reason the product exists, like a problem you had yourself, and you can say it in two sentences.
- Your brand is small enough that the founder is the brand, and people like buying from someone they can see.
- You can film a phone clip in decent light. It doesn't need to look polished. It needs to sound like you.
- If nobody on the team wants to be on camera, use a UGC-style ad with a stock presenter instead. It can say what the product does, but it can't tell your story as the maker.

## Example hooks (illustrative)

Opening lines written for made-up products, to show the shape:

- "I made this because every lunch box I owned leaked"
- "We started with one sewing machine and a kitchen table"
- "My grandmother's recipe, finally in a jar"
- "I couldn't find a desk lamp I liked, so I designed one"

## Keep it honest

Speak as the maker, not as a customer reviewing the product. Say why you made it and what it does. Leave out star ratings, "customers say" lines and results you can't back up. Whoever appears in the clip should be happy for it to run in ads.

## Questions

### What do I need to film?

A short clip of you talking to camera, saying the first two lines of the script. The storyboard shows the exact words, and each line gets about 4 seconds, so keep it short. A phone held upright is enough for the 9:16 version.

### Can someone else on the team do it?

Yes. Anyone at the company can say the lines, as long as they're happy for the clip to run in your ads.

### Can I talk about what customers tell me?

Keep it to your own story as the maker. Retelling reviews or results as if they're typical turns the ad into a testimonial, and testimonials have their own rules.

### What happens after my clip?

Three narrated scenes: the product from your photos, a short AI-generated clip of it in use, and a call to action with your offer. The narration uses facts from your product page.
